چکیده

The change of the surface relief associated with stress-induced epsilon martensite before and after the reverse transformation in an Fe-33%Mn-6%Si alloy (Msz264K) has been investigated. The permanent strain of a 2.7% tensile-strained specimen was 1.1% after the reverse transformation. In this specimen, a large part of surface relief still remained after heating to 623K (above Af). When five training cycles of 2.5% straining at room temperature and heating at 623K were applied, the permanent strain became negligible and the surface relief vanished well. TEM observations showed that usual permanent slip deformation hardly occurred in the interior of an austenite grain in a 3.8% tensile-strained specimen where the permanent strain after the reversion was 2%. These results indicate that the permanent strain in the shape memory behavior is mainly attributed to the lack of transformation reversibility, i.e., the lack of reversible movement of Shockley partial dislocations. The conditions for the reversibility were discussed and the importance of the back stress formed by the forward transformation was pointed out. The effects of traning were also briefly discussed.

Optical Microscope Study of the y ( FCC ) we ( HC ) Martensitic Transformation of a Fe - 16 % Mn - 9 % Cr - 5 % Si - 4 % Ni Shape Memory Alloy

The y(FCC)tt&(HC) transformation is studied by light optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy in a polycrystalline Fe-Mn-Si-Cr-Ni shape memory alloy. Thermal and stress-induced martensites are both studied to point out differences. A color etching method permitted to clearly observe morphological evolutions during the transformation and its reversion. Deformations of a golden microgr...

Effect of Amount of Deformation on the Martensitic Transformation and Shape Memory Effect in Fe-Mn-Si based Shape Memory Steel

The effect of amount of deformation on the martensitic transformation and shape memory effect in a Fe-16Mn-5Si-9Cr-4Ni alloy is studied. It is found that both 6and a'martensite are induced by deformation. With increasing amount of deformation, y+~-nx' transformation is greatly enhanced. the highest shape memory strain 3 3% is reached when the amount of deformation is about 5%.

Production and Characterization of Stainless Steel Based Fe-Cr-Ni-Mn-Si(-CO) Shape Memory Alloys

It is well known that the Fe based alloys can exhibit shape memory effect due to the y to E martensitic transformation. The effect may not be as striking as observed in the NiTi alloy but it might become attractive fkom the practical point of view. In this work, two compositions of Fe-Cr-Ni-Mn-Si(-Co) stainless steel based shape memory alloy, prepared by the VIM technique, will be presented. Th...

The Effect of Mn-Depleted Surface Layer on the Corrosion Resistance of Shape Memory Fe-Mn-Si-Cr Alloys

In this work, we have examined Fe-Mn-Si-Cr alloys possessing a good shape memory effect due to a high Mn content (28 wt pct). The addition of Cr (5 wt pct) was made in order to give fairly good corrosion resistance to the alloy. But we have verified that even in moderately corrosive environments, the presence of chromium does not bear any passivation. On the other hand, we have found that the a...

Effect of a Plastic Deformation on the Magnetic Properties of the Fe - 31 . 6 % Mn - 6 . 45 % Si Shape Memory Alloy

Concerning a Fe-Mn-Si shape memory alloy, it was thought of magnetic measurements to follow the evolutions with temperature of an as quenched steel before and after a 2.5% prestrain. INTRODUCTION The shape memory effect, related to the reverse E -. y transformation of a single crystal of FeMn-Si, was fist shown by Sato (1). Many works are devoted to polycrystalline Fe-Mn-Si steels (2,3). The E ...
